Marifu-Matsubara is famous for historic events. In Muromachi period (1336 - 1573), Yoshihiro Ouchi (the 25th Head of Ouchi Clan) entertained Yoshimitsu Ashikaga (the 3rd Muromachi Shogun, Head of Samurai Society at that time) on his way to Kyushu and also in the end of Edo period (1603 - 1868), the allied forces of Choshu Clan and Satsuma Clan gathered at this place to overthrow the Tokugawa Shogunate.
