The monk-painter Sesshu is highly regarded in the history of Japanese paintings. He established a style of ink painting original to Japan, and of his remaining works of art, six have been designated National Treasures. Joeiji Sesshutei Garden is believed to have been built by Sesshu, known as a famous garden representing the world of Sesshu’s ink paintings. On the premises, there is also “Nanmei Garden” created by Mirei Shigemori, who is well-known as a designer of the Honbo garden at Tofukuji Temple in Kyoto.
